Caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis it affects people of all ages and is frequently associated with people in confined spaces such as prisons, camps, or schools.  It is also seen in patients with splenectomies, or that have certain immunodeficiency problems. Meningococcal disease is preventable with the vaccine.  The vaccine covers serogroups A, C, W and Y.

We offer education regarding the vaccine including the administration to at risk populations, and to travelers who require the vaccine.

Which patient’s should receive the vaccine?

  1. Adults with anatomical or functional asplenia or complement deficiency.
  2. First year college students under 21 years of age who stay in the dormitories.
  3. Military recruits
  4. Persons who will travel or move to a Country where Meningococcal disease is endemic.
